BMW's Alpina division created one of the rarest wagons ever built with the 1998 B8 wagon now listed on Bring a Trailer. This E36-generation 3-series wagon represents a production run so limited that finding one intact remains nearly impossible for collectors.
The B8 wagon paired a 4.6-liter V-8 engine producing over 280 horsepower with a six-speed manual transmission. That powertrain alone separates it from standard 3-series wagons, which typically came with inline-six engines and fewer gears. Alpina hand-assembled this engine, tuning it for reliability and performance in ways factory BMW could not.
Alpina's exclusivity defines the brand. The Bavarian tuner builds cars in extremely limited quantities, often custom-ordered by wealthy European buyers. A V-8 wagon from that era with manual transmission simply did not exist in BMW's regular lineup. Alpina filled that niche with bespoke engineering and craftsmanship.
The E36 generation wagon (1994-1998) already represented an uncommon choice compared to sedans. Adding Alpina's modifications and that powerful engine transformed it into something collectors actively hunt for decades later. Most E36 wagons were work vehicles or family cars. Few owners took them to Alpina for upgrades.
Condition matters enormously for a 26-year-old machine of this rarity. Bring a Trailer attracts serious collectors willing to pay premium prices for low-mileage examples with documented service history. A V-8 Alpina wagon with original paint and interior components will command five-figure bids easily, sometimes exceeding what a standard 3-series wagon from any year would fetch.
The six-speed manual adds another layer of appeal. Modern buyers increasingly value manual transmissions
