Audi's upcoming Nuvolari supercar could spawn a convertible variant, according to CEO Gernot Döllinger. The V-8 powered machine currently exists as a hardtop coupe, but the executive has confirmed that an open-top version remains under consideration.
The Nuvolari represents Audi Sport's return to the supercar market after a long absence. It packs a twin-turbocharged 5.2-liter V-8 producing over 640 horsepower, delivering supercar-level performance in a lightweight carbon-fiber chassis. Audi plans to build just 499 hardtop examples, making it an exclusive proposition.
A convertible variant would follow the playbook of Ferrari, Lamborghini, and McLaren, all of which offer drop-top versions of their flagship supercars. Open-top models typically command premium pricing and attract collectors seeking maximum drama. However, Döllinger's hint comes with a caveat. He indicated that a convertible iteration would not replicate the full 499-unit production run. Instead, expect a limited subset of that total allocation.
The move makes strategic sense for Audi. The German manufacturer has spent years building credibility in the high-performance space with the R8, which itself came in roadster and coupe forms. The R8 roadster proved popular with affluent buyers willing to pay for the convertible experience. A Nuvolari droptop would offer similar appeal to ultra-wealthy enthusiasts chasing exclusivity and open-air thrills.
Production and pricing details remain unconfirmed. The hardtop Nuvolari carries an astronomical price tag expected to exceed 2.4 million euros, positioning it among the world's most expensive production supercars. A convertible would likely command even higher premiums.
