There's a narrative taking hold in automotive media, and it deserves skepticism. The story goes like this: electric vehicles keep getting longer range, manufacturers keep pushing the boundaries, and consumers keep winning because we're getting closer to gas-car parity. It's being presented as inevitable progress. But this focus on range as the primary metric of EV success is obscuring what actually matters to most drivers, and it's warping how the industry prioritizes its resources.

Let me be clear about what I'm not saying. Range anxiety is real. The ability to drive 300 miles between charges represents a genuine inflection point for EV adoption. That achievement matters. But somewhere along the way, the conversation shifted from "range is good enough now" to "range is everything." Manufacturers now compete on who can advertise the biggest number, regardless of whether that translates to better ownership experiences.

Consider what this arms race actually requires. Getting from 250 miles to 350 miles means heavier batteries, larger vehicles, more raw materials mined and processed, and longer charging times for the marginal gains. A driver who regularly drives 200 miles in a day benefits from the first jump in range capability. That same driver sees diminishing returns from the leap to 350 miles. The energy cost of carrying that extra weight is real, even if the marketing materials gloss over it.

Meanwhile, the things that genuinely frustrate EV owners get less attention. Charging infrastructure remains spotty in most of America. Repair access is limited. Software quality varies wildly. Cold-weather performance is still problematic. Insurance costs remain inflated. These are the friction points that determine whether someone's second car will be electric or whether they'll abandon the technology altogether. But these problems don't fit neatly into a press release about "record-breaking range."

The range-obsession also distorts design choices. Automakers are incentivized to build larger vehicles with bigger batteries rather than optimize efficiency or affordability. A compact EV with genuine 200-mile range and a sub-$30,000 price tag might serve more drivers than another flagship sedan claiming 400 miles of range. But the latter generates more media buzz and justifies premium pricing. Guess which one gets the development budget?

This isn't entirely the industry's fault. Consumers shopping for EVs absorb the range narrative because it's the easiest number to compare. It's concrete, it's prominent in specs, and it maps onto an existing anxiety. Magazines run "longest range EV" rankings because they get clicks. Dealerships lead with range because it's simple sales messaging. The entire ecosystem reinforces this one dimension.

But incentives matter. When manufacturers optimize for range above all else, efficiency takes a backseat. Vehicle weight increases. The electrical grid has to supply more energy per mile driven. The efficiency gains from electrification get partially offset by the bloat required to hit target mileage numbers. It's a form of innovation that looks impressive in isolation but may not serve the broader goal of decarbonization as well as alternatives would.

The uncomfortable truth is that the EV market needs both range leaders and efficiency leaders. It needs affordable models and premium models. It needs charging innovation as much as battery innovation. But the industry has organized itself around celebrating one metric because it's legible, defensible, and profitable.

Real skepticism here isn't about whether longer range is good. It's about whether the near-religious focus on maximizing this one metric is actually the best path forward. Sometimes what gets marketed as inevitable progress is just what's easiest to market. That's worth questioning.
