The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is pushing automakers toward mandatory ignition interlock technology in future vehicles, a move designed to prevent drunk driving deaths. The regulation targets reducing alcohol-impaired driving fatalities, which remain stubbornly high despite decades of safety campaigns and enforcement efforts.
Ignition interlock devices require drivers to pass a breathalyzer test before starting the engine. The technology works. Studies show these systems reduce repeat drunk driving offenses by roughly 70 percent when installed in convicted offenders' vehicles. Expanding the mandate to all new cars could theoretically save thousands of lives annually.
But implementation raises practical problems. False positives plague current interlock technology. Mouthwash, energy drinks, and even fermented foods can trigger positive readings, leaving sober drivers stranded. Calibration drift and sensor degradation worsen accuracy over time. A driver locked out of their vehicle during an emergency creates liability nightmares for manufacturers.
Privacy concerns also loom. Breath-sampling data collection raises questions about who accesses that information and whether it could be used against drivers in legal proceedings. Drivers may view mandatory interlocks as government overreach, even if the intent prevents genuine harm.
The technology also places burden on sober drivers who must prove sobriety repeatedly. Automakers argue retrofit costs and warranty complications will complicate production. Insurance companies worry about liability exposure when systems malfunction or misidentify intoxication levels.
NHTSA expects the mandate to reach roughly 9,000 fewer deaths yearly by 2035. That math is compelling. Yet forcing automakers to install systems with known reliability issues creates tension between safety goals and practical engineering realities. The regulation moves forward anyway, with implementation timelines favoring cautious rollout rather than immediate full deployment.
