What's actually happening is messier, and the incentives driving it should concern every driver on the road.

Over-the-air (OTA) updates sound great in theory. Your vehicle downloads patches, fixes bugs, adds features. No dealership visit required. But the real appeal for manufacturers is different: OTA shifts the burden of quality control from the factory floor to your driveway. And that's where the industry's misaligned incentives become obvious.

When a car maker can push a software fix after vehicles are already sold and on the road, they have less pressure to get it right before launch. The financial penalties for shipping a flawed product shrink. The factory testing becomes less rigorous. Why spend millions perfecting a system before production when you can deploy fixes later, essentially using your customers as a beta-testing army?

This isn't speculation. We've already seen it play out. Vehicles shipped with infotainment glitches, sensor calibration issues, and feature bugs that manufacturers then addressed through updates months later. In previous eras, these problems would have meant recalls, regulatory scrutiny, and real costs. Now they're just "software updates."

The industry benefits enormously. Manufacturers reduce pre-launch testing expenses. They compress production timelines. They can add half-baked features to marketing materials, knowing they'll "finish" them later with updates. Suppliers face less pressure to deliver bulletproof components when software patches can compensate for hardware shortcomings.

Who doesn't benefit? You.

Yes, the convenience of not visiting a dealership is real. But you're trading that against reliability degradation that happens before you ever notice it. A car that arrives needing fixes is still a car that arrived needing fixes, no matter how seamless the remedy feels. You're also accepting that your vehicle's functionality depends on continuous internet connectivity and manufacturer goodwill. Stop receiving updates? Your car's feature set or safety systems could stagnate.

There's also a data dimension worth acknowledging. Every OTA update is an opportunity to collect information about how you drive, where you go, and how you use your vehicle. The update mechanism becomes a data pipeline. The convenience is the incentive; the surveillance is the business model.

The regulatory environment hasn't caught up with this shift. Current safety standards still assume that cars leave the factory in their finished form. OTA systems operate in a legal gray area where liability for software failures remains murky. If an update causes a problem, who's responsible? The manufacturer who pushed it? The driver who accepted it? The telecommunications provider who delivered it? These questions remain largely unanswered.

What would proper incentives look like? Regulators could require manufacturers to maintain the same pre-market testing standards regardless of OTA capability. They could mandate that updates are optional rather than forced, preserving driver choice. They could establish clear liability frameworks so manufacturers bear real costs when updates cause problems.

Without these guardrails, OTA becomes a tool for shifting quality responsibility rather than improving vehicles. The industry gets rewarded for shipping earlier and cheaper. Drivers absorb the risks of being unwilling beta testers.

That's not progress. It's convenience masking cost-shifting.
