We're being sold a story about autonomous vehicles, and it goes something like this: the technology is inevitable, the safety case is settled, and skeptics are just being emotional or backward-looking. This trend is being sold as inevitable. It deserves more skepticism than it is getting.
Recent headlines trumpet safety studies showing robotaxis crash less frequently than human drivers. On the surface, this sounds like vindication. But let's pause and actually examine what's happening beneath the promotional messaging.
First, the comparison itself. When we measure autonomous vehicles against human drivers, we're comparing apples to carefully selected apples. Robotaxis operate in limited geographic zones, typically in good weather, on mapped routes, during reasonable hours. Human drivers operate everywhere, anytime, in rain and snow and chaos. A safety comparison that doesn't account for these radically different operating conditions isn't a fair measure of technology readiness. It's marketing dressed in the language of science.
Second, the sample size problem nobody wants to discuss. Waymo and Cruise have logged millions of miles, yes. But millions of miles is still a small dataset when you're trying to predict rare catastrophic failures. Aviation, an industry obsessed with safety, requires billions of hours of operation before declaring a new design safe. We're comparing thousands of hours of autonomous operation to billions of hours of human driving data, then announcing victory. That's premature.
Third, and most troubling, we're treating the absence of reported major incidents as proof of competence rather than what it might actually be: the early phase of any new technology, where failures haven't yet appeared at scale because the scale hasn't yet been reached.
This doesn't mean autonomous vehicles won't eventually be safer than human drivers. They might be. But that conclusion requires humility about what we actually know right now. Instead, the industry narrative has shifted toward inevitability. We're told the transition is coming whether we like it or not. Skeptics are framed as obstacles to progress.
There's also the matter of selective geography. China's resumption of robotaxi permits after a regulatory freeze, and Hong Kong's approval of driverless trials, are presented as vindication of the technology's maturity. But regulatory approval in one jurisdiction tells us very little about readiness elsewhere. It tells us about political decisions, not engineering truth.
The parking problem mentioned in recent reporting is instructive here. Robotaxis are creating thousands in costs through inefficient parking behavior. This isn't a minor software patch. It's a sign that these systems, despite billions in investment, still struggle with basic real-world problem-solving that human drivers handle unconsciously. When the technology can't figure out where to park efficiently, confidence in its ability to handle genuine emergencies seems premature.
The addition of AI assistants and new interfaces to robotaxi platforms is interesting too. These are user experience improvements, not safety breakthroughs. Yet they're being rolled out with the same breathless inevitability narrative. Better UI doesn't equal a solved transportation problem.
Here's what honest analysis looks like: autonomous vehicles have made genuine progress. They work in limited conditions better than before. That's real. But we're nowhere near a solved problem that works reliably everywhere, in all weather, handling genuine edge cases, at scale, across regulatory jurisdictions.
The dangerous part isn't the technology itself. It's the narrative that refuses to acknowledge what we don't know. It's the insistence that skepticism is backward-looking rather than appropriately cautious.
The future of transportation may indeed include autonomous vehicles. But it won't arrive because we stopped asking hard questions. It arrives because we keep asking them.
