Consider the practical reality emerging across the industry. When a carmaker can update your vehicle's software remotely, they're no longer selling you a static product. They're selling you a service that evolves after purchase. That's fundamentally different from the century-old model of "you own this machine outright."
This shift breaks something critical: the used car market as we know it.
Today, a five-year-old vehicle sells for predictable money because its capabilities are locked in. But imagine buying a used car tomorrow, only to discover the seller's software package expires, or gets downgraded, or costs a subscription to maintain. A Kia from 2027 might arrive with autonomous parking capabilities that disappear unless you pay monthly. That same car's safety features could be feature-gated behind a paywall you never agreed to.

The connectivity arms race also breaks the independence of mechanics and repair shops. When your car's software requires manufacturer approval to access, update, or modify, independent repair becomes hostage to corporate gatekeeping. This isn't theoretical. It's already happening with diagnostics, parts compatibility, and service protocols.
Small shops can't afford the equipment or licensing to service newer connected vehicles. They're being pushed out by design, not accident.
