The autonomous vehicle industry has found its favorite talking point: robotaxis are safer than human drivers. Studies circulate. Statistics get highlighted. The implication is clear—resistance to autonomous vehicles is not just outdated, it's actively dangerous. This trend is being sold as inevitable. It deserves more skepticism than it is getting.

Let me be direct about what I'm not saying. I'm not claiming autonomous vehicles are unsafe. I'm not arguing we should ban the technology or pretend it has no merit. What I am saying is that the safety argument, as currently deployed in public discourse, functions more like marketing than like genuine analysis.

Here's the problem: we're comparing robotaxis to human drivers in the most favorable possible light for the robots. Yes, robotaxis don't get drunk. They don't text while driving. They don't fall asleep at the wheel. These are real advantages. But the comparison stops there, and that's where skepticism should begin.

Robotaxis operate in carefully selected environments. They run in geographically limited areas with pre-mapped routes. They avoid heavy rain and snow. They don't operate during peak chaos hours in many markets. They navigate streets where their presence has become normalized, at least among certain populations. Human drivers do none of this. They drive in blizzards. They navigate unmapped rural highways. They handle emergency situations that robotaxi engineers haven't programmed for yet.

We're essentially comparing robotaxis operating under ideal conditions to human drivers operating under all conditions. That's not a fair baseline for claiming superiority.

Then there's the parking problem. Recent reports have highlighted how robotaxis create congestion by circling for spots, idling in traffic, or parking illegally. These aren't safety issues in the traditional sense, but they reveal something important: the real-world impacts of autonomous vehicles extend far beyond the car-to-car interaction. They touch urban infrastructure, traffic patterns, and public space in ways that safety statistics don't capture.

The industry's response to these complications is telling. Rather than acknowledge that autonomous vehicles solve some problems while creating others, the narrative stays locked in one lane: we're safer, therefore we should expand. This is incomplete thinking.

Consider also what gets measured. We count crashes. We analyze collision rates. But we don't yet have a comprehensive framework for measuring how these vehicles handle edge cases, ethical dilemmas, or infrastructure challenges. A robotaxi that never crashes but doubles parking-related congestion in a neighborhood isn't an unqualified win, yet the safety narrative treats it that way.

There's also a temporal problem. Early deployment data favors robotaxis because they're being tested in friendlier conditions and shorter routes. As the technology scales and attempts to handle more complex scenarios, will the safety advantage hold? We don't know. The industry is betting yes, and promoting that bet as certainty.

I'm not anti-autonomous vehicle. I recognize the potential. Safer roads are genuinely important. Reduced congestion could matter. The technology deserves development and testing. But it doesn't deserve a free pass based on incomplete comparisons.

What would genuine skepticism look like? It would demand that we compare robotaxis to human drivers in equivalent conditions. It would require the industry to acknowledge what autonomous vehicles don't yet handle well. It would insist that "safer than human drivers" answers only one question, when deployment raises dozens.

The autonomous vehicle industry is betting that the future inevitably belongs to them. Maybe it does. But a technology this consequential shouldn't get to write its own narrative unchallenged. The safety superiority claim sounds inevitable only because we're not asking hard enough questions about what it actually means.
