Extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs) traditionally require conventional maintenance intervals because their gasoline engines run periodically. Xiaomi's new SkyNomad N70 and N90 challenge that assumption by stretching oil change intervals to three years, narrowing the maintenance gap with full battery electric vehicles.
The SkyNomad models use a small gasoline engine as a range extender rather than a primary power source. This fundamentally changes how often the engine runs and how much stress it endures. Because the battery handles most driving duties in typical use, the gasoline engine operates intermittently and at optimal efficiency. Xiaomi engineered the system so oil degrades more slowly than in conventional vehicles with continuous engine operation.
This development matters because EREVs occupy a critical market position. They address range anxiety without requiring the charging infrastructure that deters many buyers from full EVs. Models like BMW's i3 REx and Chevrolet's Volt have proven EREV viability, yet maintenance has remained a psychological hurdle. Owners accept higher servicing costs as the trade-off for extended range.
Three-year intervals align EREVs closer to EV practicality. Most full electric vehicles need minimal routine maintenance beyond tire rotation and brake fluid checks since they lack oil, transmissions, and spark plugs. If EREVs can match these intervals, the ownership advantage shifts entirely toward range and flexibility.
The SkyNomad models also feature Xiaomi's in-house powertrains and battery technology, reflecting China's automotive innovation surge. Both vehicles target markets where EREVs remain popular, particularly in regions with underdeveloped DC fast-charging networks. Extended maintenance intervals remove another barrier to adoption.
