The consensus around autonomous vehicles has shifted. It's no longer "if" but "when." Waymo operates in multiple cities. Cruise is rebuilding. Tesla keeps pushing. The conversation has moved from whether self-driving works to how fast it scales and which company wins the race.
This comfort is understandable. Robotaxis are undeniably impressive. But it's also exactly the wrong moment to get comfortable. Because the real disruption isn't happening in the vehicle. It's happening in everything robotaxis make obsolete once they actually work at scale.
Let's start with parking. Reports of robotaxis circling endlessly, burning miles to avoid expensive lot fees, reveal a deeper problem most coverage glosses over: we've built entire urban and suburban economies around the assumption that parking is abundant and cheap. Millions of parking spaces. Billions of dollars in real estate dedicated to storing cars eight hours a day. Valet services. Parking attendants. Lot maintenance companies. Signage. Enforcement.
Autonomous vehicles don't need most of this. A robotaxi drops you at the door and drives elsewhere. Maybe it charges. Maybe it waits in a lot twenty miles away where land costs nothing. The entire parking economy becomes redundant almost overnight.
But parking is just the obvious one. What about the mechanic on the corner? The one running a two-bay shop, doing oil changes and tire rotations? Robotaxis require different maintenance schedules and centralized fleet management. Your neighborhood mechanic isn't equipped for that, and they probably won't be.
Insurance adjusters. There will be fewer accidents, sure. But there will still be some. The question is whether insurance as we know it survives when liability shifts entirely from individual drivers to fleet operators and manufacturers. Will the local insurance agent keep their job? Probably not.
Auto loan financing. If robotaxis are cheaper per mile than car ownership, vehicle sales plummet. That's not news. But it means captive finance companies, dealership F&I departments, and the entire subprime auto lending industry face structural collapse. We're talking about one of the largest pools of consumer debt in America.
Parking enforcement. Traffic control. Commercial driving jobs. Delivery routes that exist because they're optimized for human drivers. Rental car agencies. Car washes designed for owner convenience. Parts distribution networks built for the repair shop ecosystem.
The consensus narrative treats autonomy as a transportation improvement. Cleaner cities, fewer accidents, more efficient logistics. True enough. But that's the view from inside the vehicle. The view from the broader economy is much different.
This matters because disruption of this magnitude creates political pressure. Not immediately, but soon. When autonomous vehicles are competent enough to actually threaten these jobs and industries, the people affected won't debate efficiency metrics. They'll lobby. They'll push for regulations, licensing schemes, mandatory urban parking requirements, restrictions on fleet sizes, mandates for local repair shops.
We've seen this before with taxi medallions and their collapse. But parking enforcement and auto financing are bigger industries with more political muscle.
The real question isn't whether robotaxis work. They increasingly do. The question is whether we'll let the transition happen, or whether incumbent industries and affected workers will build enough political friction to slow it down dramatically.
Everyone celebrating autonomy's arrival should be asking: What breaks when this actually scales? And who's going to fight to keep those broken things from breaking?
