Ford recalls 86,000 Mustang Mach-E electric vehicles due to a defective rear side quarter window trim that can separate and fly off while driving. The trim piece fails to adhere properly because a newly implemented assembly jig prevents the primer from curing correctly during manufacturing.
The recall affects Mach-E models built between November 2020 and August 2024. Ford discovered the issue through field reports and determined that the adhesive primer did not set properly on the affected vehicles. A flying trim panel creates a road hazard and obstructs visibility for following drivers.
This manufacturing defect highlights a common pitfall when automakers introduce new production equipment without sufficient validation. The assembly jig, designed to improve efficiency, inadvertently disrupted the chemical curing process that bonds the window trim to the vehicle body. Ford engineers traced the root cause to inadequate drying time and ventilation in the new fixture.
Owners will receive notification and can schedule service at Ford dealerships. Technicians will reapply primer and properly cure the rear quarter window trim using corrected procedures. The company has also addressed the assembly jig issue at the manufacturing plant to prevent recurrence in future production.
The recall underscores quality control challenges that persist in EV manufacturing despite increased automation. While the Mustang Mach-E has established itself as a competitive midsize electric SUV in a crowded segment facing Tesla Model Y, Chevrolet Equinox EV, and Hyundai Ioniq 5, manufacturing defects damage consumer confidence and inflate warranty costs. Ford's 86,000-unit recall represents roughly 10 percent of total Mach-E production since its 2020 launch, making this one of the larger recalls for the model line.
