Every week brings another press release about artificial intelligence coming to your dashboard. Voice assistants that understand your car's diagnostics. Predictive maintenance systems. Real-time driving recommendations. The industry is racing to embed AI into vehicles as fast as silicon will allow, and automakers are positioning speed as a virtue.

Here's the unpopular take: restraint, not speed, may be the smarter strategy here.

The automotive industry has a history of moving quickly first and asking safety questions later. We've seen it with autonomous braking systems that occasionally malfunction. We've seen it with infotainment platforms so complex that drivers spend more time navigating menus than watching the road. The rush to be first often creates second-rate products that take years to actually work well.

AI in cars presents a unique problem. Unlike a smartphone app you can uninstall if it disappoints you, automotive technology gets embedded into vehicles people depend on for their safety and livelihood. A glitchy AI assistant isn't just annoying. If it misreads your car's diagnostics and you ignore a real problem, that's not a software update away from resolution. That's a potential breakdown on a highway.

Consider the current state of AI hallucination. Large language models frequently generate plausible-sounding but incorrect information. They're getting better, but they're not perfect. Now imagine that same technology advising you about your transmission fluid levels, tire pressure, or engine health. Drivers will naturally trust these systems more than they probably should, especially if they come from an automaker they already trust.

The companies pushing hardest into AI-assisted vehicle diagnostics are essentially asking millions of drivers to become beta testers. There's an argument that this is fine—that society progresses through incremental deployment and real-world feedback. But there's also an argument that some technologies deserve more careful, deliberate testing before they're released into the wild.

Speed in tech development typically means trading thoroughness for market advantage. Companies that move slowly risk getting beaten to market. Companies that move fast risk creating problems that take years to fix. In automotive, that equation should tilt differently than it does in consumer tech.

The irony is that taking more time might actually serve the industry better. Automakers could work with independent testing organizations, build redundancy into their systems, and create safeguards that prevent AI from confidently delivering wrong information. They could publish transparency reports about how their systems were trained and what their failure modes might be. They could educate drivers about what their AI assistant can and cannot reliably do.

None of this prevents innovation. It just prevents recklessness disguised as progress.

We're also at an inflection point where the decisions made now will shape driver expectations for years. If AI assistants in cars become known for being unreliable, drivers will stop trusting them entirely, even when they improve. If they become known for being dependable, that trust grows. Which reputation would you rather have if you're building these systems?

The automotive industry has legitimate competitive pressure. Falling behind in AI capabilities could mean losing market share to rivals who embraced it faster. I understand that pressure. But there's a difference between moving fast and moving recklessly. The companies that figure out how to move deliberately while still delivering innovation will likely win the trust that matters most: the trust of drivers who bet their safety on these systems every single day.

Speed isn't everything. Sometimes the smartest play is knowing when to slow down.
