The original P1 featured a 7.4-kWh lithium-ion battery paired with a 3.8-liter twin-turbocharged V8 and electric motor system producing 903 horsepower combined. That modest battery capacity limited electric-only range significantly, but it established the template for hybrid hypercars that Ferrari and Porsche would follow.
McLaren hasn't announced exact specifications for the upgraded battery, but tripling capacity from 7.4 kWh to approximately 22 kWh would substantially extend pure electric driving capability. This aligns with McLaren's stated commitment to breathing new life into aging models through technological refresh cycles. The upgrade reflects how rapidly battery energy density has improved over the past twelve years.
This move addresses a legitimate critique of the original P1. Owners wanted more electric range for city driving and track use without draining the V8.
