V Engineer has developed an aftermarket lithium-ion battery for the McLaren P1 that substantially upgrades the hybrid hypercar's electric capability. The new battery packs 12.4 kWh of capacity compared to the original 4.72 kWh unit, more than doubling the electric-only range while reducing weight by 51 pounds.
The P1, launched in 2013, paired a 3.8-liter twin-turbo V8 with an electric motor and small battery pack for a combined 903 horsepower. The original battery's modest 4.72 kWh capacity meant the P1 spent most of its time relying on its combustion engine, with the electric motor serving primarily as a torque supplement and efficiency booster. The hypercar could barely manage a few miles of pure electric driving.
V Engineer's upgrade transforms the equation. The larger 12.4 kWh battery extends EV-only range significantly, letting owners cruise in electric mode far longer than the original design intended. The 51-pound weight reduction matters for a car that prioritized low mass above almost everything else. The P1 originally weighed 3,075 pounds. Lighter batteries and more efficient powertrains represent the path forward for hybrid and electrified performance vehicles.
This aftermarket solution addresses a genuine pain point for P1 owners. McLaren's original battery was constrained by the car's late-2000s development timeline and the immaturity of lithium-ion technology at that stage. Modern battery cells pack far more energy density into smaller packages. For collectors and weekend drivers, the ability to cover more distance electrically, combined with a slight weight reduction, justifies the retrofit cost.
