This move represents the company's calculated hedge against an uncertain EV transition timeline while competition from legacy automakers and Tesla intensifies globally.
EREVs, also called range-extended electric vehicles, operate primarily on battery power but retain a small internal combustion engine that charges the battery or powers the drivetrain when the battery depletes. This architecture addresses consumer range anxiety without requiring the charging infrastructure buildout that full battery electric vehicles demand. The approach mirrors what BMW achieved with its i3 REx and what General Motors pursues with the Chevy Equinox EV.
Hyundai's 2027 EREV timeline suggests the company views the technology as a bridge strategy rather than a dead-end play. The Hyundai brand will receive EREVs first, targeting mainstream buyers who prioritize practicality and total cost of ownership. Genesis, the luxury division, will follow suit, positioning extended-range electrification as a premium alternative to fully electric flagships like the Genesis Electrified GV90. Genesis has struggled to gain traction against established German luxury EV players, so offering flexibility through EREV options could broaden its appeal in markets where charging infrastructure remains inadequate.
The company is not abandoning traditional hybrids either. Toyota's continued dominance in hybrid sales proves there remains genuine customer demand for gas-electric powertrains, particularly in regions where EV adoption lags.

The automaker is launching pickup truck and body-on-frame SUV entries, markets where it historically held minimal presence compared to Ford, General Motors, Chevrolet, and Ram. This signals aggressive growth ambitions in North America, where trucks and large SUVs generate the highest profit margins. Hyundai's existing Santa Fe and Palisade SUVs have proven successful, but unibody crossovers differ substantially from body-on-frame trucks that command premium pricing and towing capacity ratings.
The pickup market particularly interests investors. Ford F-150 and Chevrolet Silverado owners display strong brand loyalty, yet both trucks face margin pressure from EV competition. Hyundai's entry could attack the value segment or pursue connected features and technology that appeal to younger buyers.
