Consumer Reports identifies four used cars prone to oil-burning engines that buyers should avoid.
The 2010-2013 Chevrolet Equinox with the 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine suffers from excessive oil consumption, with owners reporting the engine burns through 3-4 quarts monthly. The mechanically identical GMC Terrain shares this issue. Consumer Reports recommends the 2010-2015 Toyota RAV4 instead, citing its roomy interior, fuel efficiency, handling, and reliability.
The 2014 BMW M5 F10 carries a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 producing 560 hp and 500 lb-ft of torque. More than half of survey respondents reported oil consumption issues. Consumer Reports suggests the 2013-2015 Lexus GS as an alternative, which offers a naturally aspirated 3.5-liter V6 with 306 hp and 277 lb-ft, or a hybrid version generating 338 hp and 254 lb-ft.
The 2010-2013 Acura MDX uses a 3.7-liter V6 making 300 hp and 270 lb-ft of torque. Between 10-20% of owners reported excessive oil consumption. Consumer Reports recommends the 2010-2013 Lexus RX instead, available with a 3.5-liter V6 producing 275 hp and 257 lb-ft, or a hybrid powertrain with 295 combined hp.
The 2012-2013 Subaru Impreza with the 2.0-liter flat-four engine experienced high oil usage due to defective piston rings. The issue prompted a class-action lawsuit resulting in owner reimbursement and extended warranty coverage. Consumer Reports recommends the 2012-2014 Mazda3, calling it an agile, fun-to-drive compact car with comfortable seats and good fuel economy.
