Volkswagen has suspended development of the ID.Golf electric hatchback as part of cost-cutting measures across the company. Reuters obtained an internal memo from CEO Thomas Schaefer stating, "We simply can't afford this work right now." Schaefer acknowledged the difficulty of the decision, writing, "I know what the Golf means for Volkswagen and for Wolfsburg."

The ID.Golf was intended to succeed the ID.3 and would have used a new Scalable Systems Platform (SSP) architecture. Volkswagen had shown prototypes to select people months before announcing the suspension.

VW is characterizing this as a development delay rather than a cancellation, meaning an ID.Golf remains on the company's product roadmap. No timeline for resumption has been announced.

The standard Golf has not sold in the U.S. since the current Mk.8 generation launched. The GTI and Golf R performance variants continue to be available. Whether VW would bring an electric Golf to American buyers remains unclear.

In Europe, the ID.3 Neo was recently introduced with updates, ensuring an electric Golf-like vehicle remains available to customers during the ID.Golf's suspension.
