Active regeneration occurs when the vehicle senses buildup and injects fuel into the exhaust stream to torch the soot. Some shops offer forced DPF cleaning, which involves removing the filter and running high-heat procedures.
Replacement costs range from $400 to $1,200 depending on the vehicle. Prevention works best. Extended highway drives force regeneration cycles. Using quality diesel fuel with proper detergents reduces soot production. Changing engine oil and air filters on schedule keeps the combustion process efficient.
