BMW splits the 2027 3-series onto its own combustion platform, separate from the battery-powered i3. The gas and electric versions use different underpinnings and are built at different plants, which means the conventional 3-series does not compromise to accommodate an EV sibling.

The 2027 3-series grows modestly. Wheelbase stretches 0.4 inches to 112.6 inches, length increases 1.7 inches to 187.6 inches, and width gains 0.9 inches to 72.8 inches. Height rises 0.6 inches to 57.3 inches, mostly from taller tires. The car weighs roughly 200 pounds more, with the M350 estimated near 4,200 pounds.

Both engines employ the Miller cycle to optimize air-fuel ratios and switchable exhaust valves to increase regeneration via a 48-volt hybrid system. The 330 produces 255 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque while meeting Europe's stricter emissions standards. The M350 features reshaped intake ports, revised camshaft timing, and a larger turbo, generating 437 horsepower, a gain of 51 horses over the outgoing M340i. BMW estimates the M350 reaches 60 mph a tenth or two quicker than the M340i's 3.7-second time.

The chassis receives a wider front subframe and retuned dual-link strut front suspension with higher caster angle and reduced negative camber to improve steering feel. Stiffer anti-roll bar mounts reduce flex, and rear bushings optimize passive steering characteristics. Base dampers now use hydraulic rebound stops instead of springs.

The M350 tested included standard Adaptive M suspension tuned for both dynamics and comfort, variable sport steering, and an M Sport differential with revised xDrive torque-split that allows the car to hold its line through overcooked corners. Front seats offer substantial comfort, rear seats are soft, and rear headroom exceeds the previous generation, though kneeroom remains tight for taller occupants.

The interior features a 17.9-inch touchscreen and Panoramic Vision displays projected onto the windshield. The steering wheel has unconventional spoke shapes, and the optional head-up display duplicates information already shown by Panoramic Vision. Fixed buttons are scarce, requiring touchscreen navigation for many adjustments like air vents.

As a Software Defined Vehicle, the M350 will receive Drift Moment via over-the-air update, enabling rear-only power delivery with stability control off for drift mode. Highway Assistant provides hands-free driving on limited-access highways at speeds up to 85 mph and can execute automatic lane changes confirmed by glances in the rearview mirror.

The 2027 3-series launches near the end of the first quarter of 2027. Pricing starts at $51,250 for the 330 rear-wheel-drive model, $53,250 for the 330 xDrive, and $67,250 for the M350 xDrive.
