General Motors has shelved plans to expand the Corvette brand beyond sports cars, according to GM Authority citing company sources. The automaker will not pursue a rumored Corvette SUV, electric vehicles, or four-door sedan variants.
The canceled SUV was expected to compete with models like the Porsche Cayenne. GM had also discussed electric powertrains for future Corvettes, though Chevrolet currently offers two hybrid options in the C8 Corvette. None of GM's upcoming electric-vehicle platforms will carry the Corvette badge.
The decision shelves what could have been a significant profit driver for GM, similar to how Porsche's SUV sales fund its sports car development. The report does not specify why GM killed the plans, though softer EV demand and potential backlash from Corvette loyalists are mentioned as possible factors.
Chevrolet declined to comment on the speculation when contacted. GM never officially announced the expansion plans.
The current C8-generation Corvette lineup includes the Stingray, Grand Sport, Z06, and ZR1 variants. Chevrolet has also previewed future models with a concept car called the California Corvette.
